LCIF Newsletter

May 2010
Greetings Lion,

As I look back on everything Lions Clubs International Foundation has accomplished during my time as chairperson, I feel honored to have been the leader of such a great organization. The Foundation truly brings humanitarian service to communities in every area of the world.

The many achievements of LCIF would not be possible without the support of each of you. By committing your time, funds and service, the Foundation is able to maintain its status as a leading humanitarian organization. Lions support is critical to our continued growth and achieving the unprecedented opportunity that lies ahead of us.

Developing partnerships to further our impact is also fundamental to advancing LCIF. By working with organizations that share like-minded missions, the Foundation is able to increase our ability to serve those in need.

I have great admiration and respect for your efforts on behalf of LCIF. You are my everyday heroes.

Best regards,
Al Brandel
Chairperson, LCIF
Developing New Partnerships
New partnerships continue to advance the work of LCIF and its programs worldwide. The Foundation is working with Essilor International to support comprehensive uncorrected refractive error (URE) services through the development, expansion and strengthening of sustainable systems that target underserved populations through high quality, low-cost and environmentally sound programs. LCIF recently received a US$10,000 grant from Bank of America's Chicago Division to expand Lions Quest, the Foundation's positive youth development program. Additionally, LCIF recently became a member of the Clinton Global Initiative, furthering the newly established partnership supporting cataract initiatives in Peru.
Winner Named in Lions Quest Contest
The Pittsford Lions Club and a third grade classroom
from Rutland Town School, Vermont, have been awarded first prize in the Heroes in the Community contest for their joint community service project, Food from the Heart. In conjunction with the 25-year anniversary of Lions Quest, the Pittsford Lions Club and third grade class at Rutland Town School partnered together in service. The Lions Quest program sponsored the contest. Through Food from the Heart, Lions collected 440 pounds of food and the third grade classroom collected more than 800 food items through a "100 Day" food drive they coordinated at their school. All collected food was donated to local food pantries for distribution to people in need.
Image Refresh a Success
A refreshed LCIF image recently launched in March and has since received very positive reviews. One of the central objectives of the image update is to raise awareness of the Foundation, supporting growth among both Lions and the general public. Included in the image update are refined key messages, brighter color schemes, engaging graphics and refreshed logos. Visit the LCIF homepage to view a video on the updated image.
Supporting Disaster Relief at Convention
At convention in Sydney, Australia, a number of activities will commemorate the devastating earthquake that struck
the island nation of Haiti in January. A full-size tent, like those being used in Lions' tent cities in Haiti, will be showcased in the exhibit hall by the LCIF booth. An exhibit with photos highlighting Lions' response to the Haiti earthquake will also be on display. Lions will have the opportunity to learn about relief efforts, see first-hand the tents we are providing and make a contribution to further support disaster relief efforts. In addition, Haitian Lions will speak at the LCIF plenary session, providing a first-hand account. Lions will also have the opportunity to support other recent disasters, like the Chile and China earthquakes.
Grants Approved at Board Meeting
At the April Board Meeting in Hamburg, Germany, 65 projects were awarded a total of US$2,554,948 in funding. Approved projects ranged from expanding centers for the disabled to purchasing vehicles that provide health services. View a full list of approved grants online.
New LCIF Videos Available
The Foundation has three new videos available, including Lions Are....LCIF, SightFirst II: Looking Forward, and Making a Difference Together. All three videos will debut at events throughout convention. The videos are now available online. Please contact LCIF Communications for hard copies.
